Build a useful starting picture
Collect available water-bill history, meter observations, plans and details of recent groundworks. Note whether a suspected loss continues when known outlets are closed, without isolating a shared supply unless authorised.
A wet car park does not establish a leaking water main on its own. Surface drainage, rainfall and other buried services may need to be considered.
Plan the survey around the site
- Provide safe access to meter chambers and known valves.
- Arrange parking restrictions where the survey needs clear access.
- Identify buried-service information and any restrictions on testing.
- Agree who may authorise isolation, excavation or traffic management.
Detection and excavation are separate decisions
Acoustic listening, correlation and tracer-gas techniques can help in suitable conditions. Pipe material, depth, background noise and access affect which approach is appropriate. Any location should be reported with its confidence and limitations.
Do not assume an investigation includes excavation, repairs or reinstatement. Confirm those separately, including the relevant permissions.
